Optimism among analysts and institutional investors in Germany fell 5.9 points from July to an eight-month low of -25.5 in August, according to the sentiment index of the Mannheim-based Center for European Economic Research (ZEW).

The August decline marks the fourth consecutive month-over-month drop in confidence. The index has fallen more than 46 points in that period.

ZEW says the trend shows that German investors still expect the domestic economy to cool for the next six months. The research group says the country's exporters may be the hardest hit because of economic contraction abroad.

ZEW's gauge of investors' view of Germany's current economic conditions fell to +18.2, the lowest level since July 2010.
