Zhejiang Geely Commercial Vehicle (GCV) Group’s New Energy Vehicle unit is forming a joint venture with Utah-based Via Motors International Inc. to co-develop a medium-duty extended-range electric truck.
The truck will use Via’s proprietary vehicle software and systems control technology and an unspecified Volvo engine as the range extender. The partners plan to launch the truck in China and North and Latin America in 2019.
Via markets a range of commercial trucks retrofitted with the company’s V-Drive range-extender technology under its VTRUX brand. The company is headed by former General Motors Co. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who joined Via’s board of directors in 2011.
GCV, which is a subsidiary of China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., has two sub-brands: the London Electric Vehicle Co. and Yuan Cheng Auto. Geely Holdings owns Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Volvo Cars, Proton, Lotus and an 8% stake in Volvo Trucks.
