China’s Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. says 90% of its vehicle lineup will be so-called “new-energy” models by 2020. This will include hybrids, plug-in hybrids, all-electric and fuel cell vehicles.
The rollout coincides with new regulations in China that will reduce fuel consumption from today’s 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers (about 34 mpg) on local driving cycles to 5 liters/100 km (47 mpg) by 2020.
Geely’s initial focus will be on gasoline-electric and plug-in hybrids, which it hopes to sell at prices close to conventionally powered cars. But the company also introduced an electric city car earlier this year and plans to ramp up sales of EVs too.
Geely’s parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., which also owns Volvo Cars, acquired U.S.-based EV startup company Emerald Automotive LLC in February 2014.
