Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit has named Axel Andorff vice president of research and development.

Prior to his new position, Andorff spent 18 years at Daimler AG. He most recently headed concept development of electric vehicles for Mercedes-Benz. He also held various positions in research and development, purchasing—including a stint in China—and product development. His credits include leading the development of the first-generation Mercedes GLA and CLA models.

At SEAT, Andorff’s responsibilities include leading the company’s development efforts in electrification, connectivity and new mobility systems.

Andorff succeeds Matthias Rabe, who will head the new Technical Development Operations for the VW brand. Rabe led the development of SEAT’s latest Ibiza and Leon cars and the new Arona, Ateca and Tarraco SUV/crossover vehicles.
