CEO Mark Fields confirms Ford Motor Co. is developing an all-electric car to compete with such upcoming rivals as the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3 EVs. The company has applied to trademark the name Model E.

Reports say the car also may be offered with a choice of hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain. Fields offered no detail about the project. But he did indicate the vehicle will be able to match the 200-mile range promised by the Bolt, Model 3 and a redesigned Nissan Leaf due in 2018.

Ford currently sells an all-electric version of its Focus small car, but its range is only 76 miles. An updated model due this autumn will be able to travel 100 miles per charge. The company said in December it plans to invest $4.5 billion to add 13 hybrid, plug-in or electric vehicles by 2020.
