Ford Motor Co. is offering to license hundreds of its 650 patents on electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain systems.
Ford says the move aims to accelerate innovation. The company will market its patents through its technology commercialization and licensing officer and via the AutoHarvest Foundation the company co-founded three years ago.
Under the scheme competitors will be able to buy rights to use Ford patents in such areas as battery cell discharge balancing, regenerative braking optimization and driver feedback systems that encourage improved fuel economy.
Ford's offer follows last year's decision by Tesla Motors Inc.'s to release all its patents. The primary difference: Tesla isn't charging a fee for access to its patents.
