Former Ford Motor Co. marketing whiz Bob Rewey died in Florida last weekend at age 76 after a short illness.
Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. describes Rewey as a "marketing visionary" who introduced the industry to brand management and in 1980 vehicle leasing with Ford's Red Carpet Leasing program.
Rewey once described the role of marketing as being the "customer's champion" by understanding what buyers want and giving it to them. He detected the emerging role of the pickup truck for personal transportation, adding carlike features to push sales of the Ford Ranger small pickup.
Rewey was Ford's group vice president of global consumer services when he retired in 2001. Previous assignments included vice president of marketing, sales and service; general manager of Ford Div. and general manager of Lincoln-Mercury.
He also created Ford's Special Vehicle Team to cater to Ford customers who are performance enthusiasts. He also ruffled dealers with the Ford Retail Network, an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to consolidate franchises in metro areas into joint ventures with the company.
