Ford Motor Co. is repurposing its Advanced Engineering Center in Dearborn, Mich., to focus on hybrid and electric vehicle development. The company says the 285,000-sq-ft facility eventually will house more than 1,000 engineers.

Ford says it has doubled the number of people working on EVs and other fuel-saving technologies over the past five years.
