Ford Drops Takata Airbag Inflators

Ford Motor Co. is the latest carmaker to say it will no long use Takata Corp. airbag inflators that contain ammonium nitrate as a propellant.
Honda, Nissan and Toyota made similar announcements earlier this month. The decisions came after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined Takata $70 million for misleading the agency and carmakers about problems with the devices. NHTSA also ordered Takata to phase out ammonium nitrate by 2018.
Takata inflators that explode when triggered by a crash have killed eight people and injured more than 100 others. Over the past six years, 12 carmakers have recalled roughly 40 million vehicles worldwide to replace the Takata devices.
