Ford Motor Co. will use its first range-extender system in the upcoming plug-in hybrid variant of the Transit Custom commercial van.
The series-hybrid system teams a lithium-ion battery back and Bosch electric motor with a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine. In this case, the turbocharged Ecoboost engine powers a generator for the electric powertrain but doesn’t directly drive the wheels.
Ford says the hybrid Transit has an all-electric range of 50 km (31 miles) based on the European driving cycle. The vehicle can travel another 470 km (280 miles) with the help of the engine, while generating less than 50 g/km of carbon dioxide and 0.06 g/km of nitrogen oxide emissions.
Ford is partnering with Robert Bosch GmbH and Prodrive Ltd. on the electric system, which the companies are testing in a fleet of 20 hybrid Transits in London. Volume production is due to start in 2019.
