Fisker Automotive Inc. has dispatched engineers and insurance investigators to probe a fire that broke out in one of its Karma plug-in hybrid sedans on Friday in Woodside, Calif.
The company says the blaze originated forward of the driver's side front tire and did not damage the passenger compartment or injure anyone. The fire did not involve the car's lithium-ion battery or exhaust system, according to Fisker.
The incident involved a car that was not being recharged at the time, as did a Karma fire of undetermined origin that occurred in Texas four months ago, the company says.
Fisker has recalled the Karma twice to replace its battery. The first campaign was to fix a problem that could result in an engine compartment fire. The other involved a glitch that could shut down vehicle systems. Supplier A123 Systems took responsibility for the second recall, which involved "contaminated" batteries it made.
