The Chinese owner of bankrupt Fisker Automotive Inc. intends to resume production of the company's Karma hybrid sedan in mid-2015 but perhaps under a new brand name, The Detroit News reports.
Fisker's assets were acquired in March by Chicago-based Wanxiang America Corp. for $150 million. The company has pledged to relaunch Karma production through Finland's Valmet Automotive, the car's original assembler, once it overcomes flaws in the original car that prompted three recalls.
Fisker interim President Roger Brown tells the News that Wanxiang hopes to follow the reborn Karma with a wagon variant called the Surf in 2016 and a lower-cost sedan called Atlantic in 2017. But he says they may not retain the Fisker brand.
Brown adds that Fisker's staff of 25 is temporarily headquartered in Costa Mesa, Calif. The company aims to install a new CEO within 90 days.
