Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans to spend $262 million this year to prepare its minivan plant in Windsor, Ont., for a “future product,” according to Unifor union President Jerry Dias.
He tells Automotive News Canada the investment assures a future for the factory, even though FCA said last month it intends to eliminate the plant’s third shift by the end of September.
ANC reported last month that FCA plans to spend C$350 million ($262 million) to retool the Windsor facility this summer to add an all-wheel-drive powertrain for the Pacifica minivan made there. The newspaper says it isn’t clear whether Dias’ reference to a “future product” means the new powertrain or an entirely new model.
Last month ANC cited an analyst who said FCA will phase out the Dodge Grand Caravan minivan and introduce an entry-level minivan that revives the company’s Voyager nameplate. The new model would ride on the same platform that carries the Pacifica.
