Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will use its planned local production of right-hand-drive Jeep SUVs in India to supply vehicles to Australia, South Africa and the U.K., The Times of India reports.
FCA said last month it intended to invest $280 million to establish Jeep assembly operations in Ranjangaon in the second quarter of 2017. At the time, the company didn't identify the Jeep model or indicate whether it planned to export any units.
The new Jeep is code named C SUV and likely will be priced at about 1.5 million rupees ($23,500), according to the Times. That would be less than one-third the cost of an imported Jeep, which is subject to a 180% import tariff.
FCA will build the new model through its manufacturing venture with Tata Motors Ltd. The alliance currently makes the Fiat Linea small sedan and Grand Punto five-door hatch for FCA.
