Next month Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will begin calling back 470,000 cars and SUVs to replace electronic controllers that are supposed to help prevent whiplash injuries by making the headrests move forward when the vehicle is struck from behind.
The global recall involves 2012 model Jeep Liberty small SUVs and 2012-2013 midsize Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger sedans. Nearly 90% of the affected vehicles are in the U.S.
FCA says the control computers can degrade after several years and stop functioning correctly. If so, a warning light may illuminate on the instrument panel. The company reports no injuries associated with the defect.
