Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling some 297,000 of its minivans to fix faulty wiring that could cause the driver’s front airbag to deploy when it shouldn’t.

The campaign, which is scheduled to begin at the end of July, will target 2011-2012 Dodge Grand Caravan models in the U.S. and Canada.

The problem is due to a misrouted wiring harness in the steering wheel. Wires could chafe and create a short circuit that triggers the airbag. The condition can be detected before an unintended deployment by an illuminated airbag system warning light.

Several other electrical glitches also may indicate an issue, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These include windshield wipers that start up on their own and speed control switches that stop working.
