Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV admits it failed to meet legal deadlines for customer notification in five safety recalls within the past 17 months, the Associated Press reports.
Carmakers are supposed to notify customers within 60 days of alerting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of a recall. Each failure to do so could bring a fine of as much as $35 million.
The tardy recalls include campaigns to fix stalling problems and ignition switches that can be jostled out of the "on" position.
FCA insists its recall procedures have improved. In a June 1 letter to NHTSA the company detailed several steps it is taking, including biweekly internal meetings, a larger staff to track recalls and closer monitoring of recall campaigns by senior management.
FCA hopes to persuade NHTSA that a planned public hearing on July 2 to review the company's performance in 20 recent recalls is no longer necessary. NHTSA says it will move ahead with the hearings anyway.
