The White House hopes to have 1 million electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015. But Pike Research LLC says that goal won't be achieved until 2018.
The Boulder, Colo.-based market research firm says the challenges of launching new models and convincing Americans to buy them have slowed the rollout. It estimates only 410,000 EVs will be on the road by 2015.
Still, Pike predicts strong growth as demand for plug-in EVs nearly triples in the U.S. from now through 2014. Its Plug-in Electric Vehicles report says global sales of such vehicles will reach 1.7 million per year by 2020.
Plug-in hybrid electrics will outsell battery electrics in North America for many years, according to the report. It says the opposite will be true in Europe and Asia, where pure electrics better suit local daily driving needs.
