Beginning this month, tires made for sale in the European Union must bear a simple rating label that indicates relative noise, fuel efficiency and wet traction performance.

The system which covers tires made since June for cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks is the result of a regulation approved by the European Commission in 2009. The labels report a decibel level and A-to-G grades for rolling resistance and wet traction.

The ratings don't consider other characteristics, such as durability or behavior on dry or wintry surfaces. The EC suggests consumers continue to review independent tests to assess a tire's overall performance.
