The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ruled that the allowable sulfur content in gasoline must drop to 10 parts per million from the current 30 ppm by 2017.
EPA figures the Tier 3 reduction will help emission control systems work more efficiently, prevent at least 225 premature deaths per year and reduce annual emissions of nitrogen oxide by 260,000 tons.
The agency estimates the cost to refiners will be less than one cent per gallon.
