Rockville, Md.-based Genovation Cars this week set a new speed record of 205.6 mph for a street-legal electric vehicle with a heavily modified sixth-generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

The record run at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida was certified by the International Mile Racing Assn. Genovation broke its own record of 186.8 mph, which it set earlier this year with the Corvette-based GXE (Genovation Extreme Electric). The previous mark of 177 mph was set by a Finnish prototype car.

The GXE replaces the Z06’s 505-hp 7.0-liter V-8 engine with a pair of electric motors and a 44-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric drivetrain generates 700 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, according to Genovation. On a traditional driving cycle, the GXE has an estimated driving range of 130 miles.

The “Ludicrous” version of Tesla’s Model S, which can zip from zero to 60 mph in three seconds, is limited to 155 mph.

Genovation also makes all-electric versions of the Ford Focus and Mercedes SL. Buyers can get the GXE for $330,000 (or $290,000 if the customer supplies a base Z06).
