The TX5 taxis can travel more than 600 kilometers with the help of a small piston-powered onboard generator to recharge the battery on the fly.
The six-passenger taxis are being built in Coventry, England, by the London Electric Vehicle Co. (formerly London Taxi Co.), a unit of China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. The company has the capacity to make 36,000 of the taxis per year.
The TX5 rollout comes ahead of a rule that will require new taxis in the city be capable of operating in zero-emission mode, effective Jan. 1.
