Dyson’s Next Cleanup Project: EVs?
Dyson Ltd., the U.K.-based home appliance firm, has received a £174 million ($245 million) grant from the British government to develop an electric vehicle, according to a report by The Guardian.

Dyson Ltd., the U.K.-based home appliance firm, has received a £174 million ($245 million) grant from the British government to develop an electric vehicle, according to The Guardian.
The five-year program, which called for creating 500 jobs at Dyson’s Wiltshire headquarters, was mentioned in the new National Infrastructure Delivery Plan on the gov.uk Web site but has since been deleted, according to the newspaper. Dyson declined to comment.
A separate program announced last week regarding a £16 million ($23 million) grant Dyson received to develop next-generation battery technologies remains listed in the government plan. Last year Dyson purchased Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Sakti3 for $90 million. The U.S. company, which was spun off from the University of Michigan, is developing a new solid-state chemistry that promises to double the life of lithium-ion batteries.
Dyson is best known for its bagless vacuum cleaner. In recent years, the company has launched several other innovative products, including bladeless fans, an LED lamp, hygienic humidifier and robot cleaners. Several of the new products are battery-powered devices.
