Daimler AG has agreed with European regulators that it must recall 127,800 of its 2013 model cars to replace their outlawed air-conditioning system refrigerant.
The European Union banned R134a coolant at the beginning of 2013 because the material has a global warming potential 1,400 times that of carbon dioxide.
The only available substitute was R1234yf, a material developed by DuPont and Honeywell that has a global warming potential of 4. Daimler claimed that its tests showed the material could catch fire in a crash under conditions that SAE International and other testing groups described as “exceptionally remote.”
Daimler defied the EU order and continued to sell certain models with R134a coolant for several months. Germany issued Daimler a retroactive waiver on the practice but was later overruled by a court order. The carmaker warned two months ago that it might have to recall the affected vehicles.
