Continental AG’s ContiTech Vibration Control unit says its new fiberglass-reinforced spring strut mount is 25% lighter than traditional steel or aluminum units. The design also enables a longer service life and features an insulating rubber element that enhances ride comfort, the supplier claims.

ContiTech developed the strut mount, which is made from BASF’s Ultramid polyamide material, for General Motors Co.’s all-new Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan due later this year. The application marks the first time a fiberglass-reinforced polyamide has served as the primary structural component in a spring strut mount, according to the company.

The new two-section, three-path mount, which is used in the front and rear axles, includes fiberglass-reinforced polyamide and aluminum components. ContiTech says the design can withstand high shock loads equivalent to driving on a “badly potholed” road, and reduces the effects of counter-torque on the shock absorber.

ContiTech has been designing automotive components with BASF's Ultramid material since 2006. Uses include heavy-duty engine mounts and transmission cross-members.
