PSA Peugeot Citroen SA took the wraps off the Citroen E-Mehari electric vehicle this week. The car is an updated version of a drop-top by the same name that was marketed by Citroen in the 1960s.

Sales of the dune buggy-like convertible crossover model will begin next spring in France. Citroen hasn’t announced pricing or said if it will offer the vehicle in other markets.

The new EV is based on the Bollore Bluesummer convertible that PSA co-developed with France’s Bollore Group. Styling cues come from Citroen’s Cactus M concept vehicle unveiled last September at the Frankfurt auto show.

The E-Mehari is powered by a 30-kWh lithium-metal-polymer battery and electric motor that generates 68 hp. Driving range is estimated at 120 miles. Top speed is just 68 mph.

Citroen says the battery can be fully recharged in 13 hours on a standard system and in eight hours on a high-output charger. The company plans to build the car at its facility in Rennes, France.
