Chrysler Group LLC plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of its next-generation Chrysler Town & Country minivan by the end of next year about 12 months earlier than originally planned, Automotive News reports.
Chrysler alluded to the model in an investor presentation in May. The product plan it describes mentions other future hybrids, including a large crossover. CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed the plug-in minivan at the Paris auto show last week.
Chrysler, like other carmakers, is adding hybrids to its lineup to help meet future fuel economy targets. Marchionne doubts that pure electric powertrains will replace piston power outright, especially in the U.S., because of their high cost and limited range.
But AN notes that Chrysler brand chief Al Gardner has said a minivan plug-in hybrid could deliver fuel economy akin to that of the smaller Toyota Prius sedan.
