The plug-in hybrid variant of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s all-new Chrysler Pacifica minivan will carry a $43,100 sticker price—before a $7,500 federal tax credit and any state and local incentives are applied—when it arrives in U.S. dealerships early next year.

The upscale Platinum model will start at $46,100. The extra $3,000 adds Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, 13-speaker audio system, 3D navigation and 18-inc wheels.

The base non-hybrid Pacifica LX, which was launched in April, starts at $29,600. But Chrysler notes that a conventionally powered Pacifica equipped with the same features as the top hybrid model is priced at $43,500.

The Pacifica Hybrid’s sticker also undercuts the Volvo XC90 T8 a plug-in hybrid crossover/SUV. That vehicle starts at nearly $70,000.

Despite the vehicle’s plug-in capabilities, Chrysler will market it simply as the Pacifica Hybrid. The company says recent studies indicate consumers are leery of the term “plug-in” because they associate it with EV range anxiety.

The Pacifica Hybrid teams a tweaked version of Chrysler’s 3.6-liter V-6 engine with two electric motors (a 90 kWh primary unit and a 65 kWh secondary one) and a 16-kWh battery pack. The latter is stored under the middle row seats, which forced Chrysler to replace its signature “Stow ’n Go” seating system, which folds flat into the floor, with traditional captain’s chairs.

The hybrid powertrain produces a combined 260 hp. Chrysler says it won’t release torque output until standards are finalized on how to calculate this for hybrid and electric vehicles. It will take two hours to fully charge the Pacifica hybrid on a dedicated 240-volt charger, or 14 hours with a standard 110-volt wall outlet.

As previously announced, the Pacifica Hybrid will have a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy rating of 80 mpg equivalent. The vehicle’s overall driving range is listed at 530 miles, including 30 miles in all-electric mode.

Production of the Pacifica Hybrid will start later this month at Chrysler’s plant in Windsor, Ont.
