Chrysler Group LLC says 70 regional sales and marketing employees will move this summer into a downtown Detroit office building, which will be renamed Chrysler House.
CEO Sergio Marchionne also will occasionally work out of the office, the company says.
The company has operated factories in the city for decades. But the new office will be Chrysler's first non-manufacturing facility in Detroit in its 87-year history. The company was based in Highland Park a small city surrounded by Detroit until moving its current headquarters to Auburn Hills, Mich., in 1994.
Chrysler has promoted its gritty Detroit roots in an advertising campaign that began with the "Imported from Detroit" commercial during the 2011 Super Bowl. Marchionne says the new office reinforces that message.
The company currently makes engines and Jeep SUVs in the city. Chrysler plans to reopen a mothballed Detroit factory to begin producing the next-generation SRT Viper sports car in the fourth quarter of this year.
