The Canadian Auto Workers union is likely to pick Chrysler Group LLC as the strike target in contract talks with Detroit automakers that are scheduled to begin on Aug. 14 in Toronto, the Windsor Star reports.
The existing agreements, which cover about 25,000 CAW members, expire on Sept. 17. The union has historically chosen to settle with one carmaker first, thus setting a pattern for pacts with the other two companies.
Analysts tell the newspaper that Chrysler, with 25% of its North American output in Canada, is the most vulnerable to a strike. They note that the company has no alterative source for the minivans it produces in Windsor, Ont.
The companies have said they want the CAW to shrink hourly labor costs to match wage and benefit levels in the U.S. The union says it is willing to discuss more flexible work rules and other efficiency measures. But the CAW rules out a two-tier wage system or closing the traditional pension fund to new hires both features of the current United Auto Workers union contracts with American automakers.
