Two-year-old SF Motors Inc. claims it will begin selling its first model, an electric crossover vehicle called the SF5, in the U.S. next year.

The Chinese startup unveiled the luxury SUV in concept form (pictured) yesterday at its headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif.

SF Motors aims to assemble vehicles in a factory in Indiana it acquired in November from AM General LLC.

The company also showed a second EV, the coupe-like SF7 crossover, but provided few details. Both cars will come equipped with semi-self-driving features designed to enhance driver safety.

The SF5 will be able to travel 300 miles on a charge, according to CEO John Zhang. He says the crossover will offer a four-motor, 1,000-hp variant that can race from zero to 60 mph in about three seconds.

SF Motors is backed by China’s Chongqing Sokon Industry Group. Zhang says the startup’s factory will begin pre-production work in the third quarter and start taking pre-production orders by the end of this year. He vows to meet the company’s production targets on schedule.
