Chinese carmakers are stepping up development of motors for electric vehicles in a bid to become a dominant global supplier in the field, The Nikkei says.
The Tokyo-based newspaper notes that China’s central government has identified motors, along with EV batteries and control systems, as priorities for the country’s fast-growing EV industry.
EV makers that once built their own motors are increasingly outsourcing them to reduce costs, the report points out. It adds that motor research in Japan, an early leader in motor development, has slowed because of funding cuts and “technological slumps.”
Future motor development work will focus on ways to make components smaller, lighter and cheaper to manufacture, the newspaper opines. It says a flood of technical papers from China about those objectives signals the country’s determination to become a major supplier to EV makers worldwide.
