U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators ended intensive talks in China today far apart on some key issues. But both remain optimistic about reaching a deal and will resume their efforts in the U.S. next week.
The two countries agreed in December to suspend escalating counter-tariffs until March 1 in hopes of resolving their simmering trade war. Negotiators have been cautious about their assessment of progress to date and stopped short of indicating any consensus in principle had been achieved.
Nevertheless, the heads of both countries were encouraging. President Donald Trump declares the talks are going “extremely well.” China President Xi Jinping says “important progress” was made this week.
If no deal is reached by March 1, President Donald Trump has said he will raise current tariffs on $200 billion worth of imported Chinese goods from the current 10% to 25%. But he also indicated this week that he might delay that step if meaningful progress is being made.
