Caterpillar Inc.’s venture capital subsidiary has made an unspecified investment in California-based electric vehicle startup Fisker Inc.
The agricultural and heavy-equipment giant reportedly wants access to the solid-state battery technology Fisker is developing. Fisker aims to launch the technology early next decade, which would be several years earlier than targets set by other carmakers and battery suppliers.
Solid-state batteries promise to have more than double the energy density of current lithium-ion units. This would give EVs longer driving ranges and shorter charging times.
