The California Air Resources Board has voted to ban the sale of cars in the state that don’t meet current Obama-era air greenhouse gas emission standards for 2017-2025 models.
The decision affirms CARB’s determination to enforce currently scheduled pollution regulations, even if the Trump administration decides to freeze them at 2020 levels. A dozen other states and the District of Columbia also follow California’s decisions on emissions, creating a group that represents about one-third of all car sales in the U.S.
CARB reiterates that it wants to avoid a protracted legal battle with the White House over its right to set its own standards, including those for carbon dioxide. Doing so would avoid dividing the U.S. with two sets of emission rules, something that carmakers ardently want to prevent.
The board has signaled that it would be willing to grant carmakers more options to help them achieve the original regulatory schedule.
