General Motors Co. plans to begin making the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended-range hybrid car late next year, according to GM Inside News, which cites an anonymous source.

The ELR will be produced at the Detroit-Hamtramck factory that makes the Chevrolet Volt and its Opel/Vauxhall Ampera variant.

GM confirmed its decision to build the 2+2 coupe, which will be based on its 2009 Cadillac Converj plug-in hybrid concept, last August. But it provided no other details.

GMI says the Caddy EV will use the Volt's powertrain. That system is expected to offer more driving range and performance when it debuts in the Volt, Ampera and AMP in the 2014 model year. The current Volt can travel about 40 miles in electric-only mode.

GM plans to sell the Caddy ELR only in North America in 2014, according to GMI. But it predicts the car will be exported to China and Europe in 2015.
