Robert Bosch GmbH has begun construction of a 779 million-yuan ($116 million) factory in Nanjing, China, to make advanced regenerative braking systems for hybrid and electric vehicles.
The 20,000 sq-meter (215,300 sq-ft) facility is scheduled to open in 2019. The plant will make Bosch’s iBooster system, which captures energy during braking and uses it to help recharge a vehicle’s onboard propulsion battery.
Bosch says the Nanjing facility will have initial capacity to make 400,000 such systems per per year. When a second production line is added in about 2024, annual output will expand to 3.2 million units.
