Stuttgart-based Borgward Group AG plans to launch its first electric vehicle, a modified version of the BX7 crossover, next year in China and Europe.

The BXi7 EV will be powered by a pair of electric motors that produce a combined 365 hp and 288 lb-ft of torque. Borgward says the vehicle will have a 375-km (233-mile) driving range with a battery that can be charged to 80% capacity in 45 minutes.

Exterior styling changes from the conventionally powered BX7 are minimal. The electric version gets a modified grille and updated fenders.

Borgward also will launch the smaller BX6 crossover later this year in the Middle East and South America. Availability will be expanded to southeast Asia next year.

The all-wheel-drive BX6 will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that makes 220 hp and a 220 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic-manual transmission, which the company says has nine driving modes based on road conditions and driver preferences.

Borgward, a brand that dates back to 1919, was relaunched in 2008 with backing from Beijing-based Beiqi Foton Motor Co. The revived carmaker currently offers the BX5 and BX7.
