BMW AG plans to recall its entire production run of electric i3 city cars because of the higher risk of neck injuries to small adults sitting in the front passenger seat.
The recall covers about 30,500 of the i3 models delivered between the car’s introduction in 2014 and the just-introduced 2018 model. Another 1,200 targeted vehicles are in dealer inventories. Dealers have been instructed not to sell the cars until BMW develops a fix for the problem.
The issue affects adults no larger than 5 feet tall and 110 lbs. BMW says the problem didn’t show up in earlier testing, and the company emphasizes there is no elevated risk for small occupants who wear their seatbelts.
