BMW AG says it will produce the new three-cylinder gasoline engine for its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at the company's Hams Hall engine plant near Birmingham, England.
The highly automated factory has assembled three million four-cylinder engines for Mini and BMW 3 Series cars since it opened in 2001. The company says adding the three-cylinder engine won't create any new jobs there.
BMW will build the i8 at its assembly plant in Leipzig, Germany.
The i8's parallel hybrid powertrain can operate in any ratio of electric and piston power, generating a combined 164 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. BMW has said the 2+2 i8 will be able to operate in electric-only mode for about 35 km but also accelerate from zero to 100 kph in less than 5 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 kph. The car is rated at 2.7 liters per 100 km on the European driving cycle.
