BMW AG says it will produce the new three-cylinder gasoline engine for its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at the company's Hams Hall engine plant near Birmingham, England.

The highly automated factory has assembled three million four-cylinder engines for Mini and BMW 3 Series cars since it opened in 2001. The company says no new jobs will be created by adding the three-cylinder powerplant.

The i8's parallel hybrid powertrain can operate in any ratio of electric and piston power, generating a combined 349 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. BMW has said the 2+2 i8 will be able to operate in electric-only mode for about 20 miles but also accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.
