Next month BMW AG will begin calling back 91,800 of its 2005-2008 model Mini coupes and convertibles in the U.S. to replace defective passenger seat sensor mats.
BMW says the mats may not correctly detect an adult in the seat. If so, the passenger-side airbags would fail to deploy in a crash. The company is aware of one injury that may be linked to the flaw.
The Mini recall is the second expansion of a related campaign begun in 2008 to replace faulty mats in 200,000 BMW-brand cars in the U.S. The company added 76,600 other BMW models to that recall in 2013. Mats in affected Minis show the same performance defect but have a different design and construction.
