BMW AG will recall 220,000 3 Series compact cars worldwide to replace airbag inflators that could deploy with too much force.
The defective component, which was made by Tokyo-based Takata Corp., also caused General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota to recall 3.4 million vehicles last month.
BMW says the campaign involves cars produced between December 2001 and March 2003. The carmaker estimates that 180,000 of those vehicles are still in use.
The recalls by all carmakers involve front-seat passenger frontal airbag modules with propellant that could generate excessive pressure when ignited. Automakers say the malfunction could spray metal fragments toward the windshield or into the passenger footwell.
