BMW AG is looking into a report by ABC News that says more than 40 of its cars and SUVs in the U.S. have spontaneously burst into flames after being shut off and parked.
None of the affected vehicles was the subject of a recall over a fire issue. Nor is there an obvious source of the problem. The television network’s coverage showed a blazing fire in the passenger compartment of an SUV.
BMW says the vehicles covered by the analysis were between 1 and 15 years old, had accumulated as many as 232,000 miles and caught fire anywhere from a few minutes to several days after being switched off. The company so far has found no common thread to explain the problems.
ABC turned over its findings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency so far has not pinpointed a safety defect.
BMW says it has about 4.9 million vehicles in use in the U.S. The company, which notes that fire incidents involving its vehicles are “extremely rare,” continues to investigate.
