BMW AG says it might move some of its engine and Mini car production out of the U.K. if Britain exits the European Union without new EU trade deals in place.
A so-called “hard” Brexit would mean, for example, that engines made in England would no longer be considered EU content for the cars that use them, the company tells Reuters. That shift could jeopardize the local content requirements for trade pacts between the EU and other markets.
The issue threatens the future of the BMW plant at Hams Hall, England, which builds about 375,000 engines annually. Most of those units are used by Minis made in England.
A no-trade-deal Brexit could force BMW to source more of those engines from the company’s huge engine plant in Steyr, Austria, for Minis made in the EU, Reuters reports.
