BMW AG is developing an all-electric crossover to produce in America and compete with Tesla Motor Inc.'s upcoming compact Model X crossover, according to Germany's Wirtschaftswoche.

The newspaper says BMW CEO Harald Krueger is eager to introduce such a model. Pending board approval, BMW would produce the vehicle at its SUV factory in South Carolina. The plant currently builds conventionally powered X3, X4, X5 and X6 crossovers.

The new EV would become the third model in BMW's "i" sub-brand, joining the i3 electric city car and i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. The new crossover is expected in 2018.

The BMW report comes as rival Audi AG announces it will unveil a similarly sized sporty electric crossover concept at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The company has indicated a production version will bow in early 2018, along with plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-powered iterations.
