BMW AG's BMW i Ventures electric vehicle unit is making an unspecified investment in California-based Coulomb Technologies Inc., whose ChargePoint network operates EV charging stations in more than 14 countries.

BMW created i Ventures last year as a venture capital unit to expand the company's telematics and navigation services.

Coulomb's network includes more than 8,600 independently owned charging locations supported by cloud-based customer billing and support services.

BMW says its investment will support the development of a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electrics. Last year the company launched its "i" sub-brand for green vehicles and aims to introduce its i3 electric city car and high-performance i8 plug-in hybrid coupe next year.
