BMW AG has completed a deal to build all-electric Mini small cars in a 50:50 partnership with China’s Great Wall Motor Co.
The companies, which announced their intent in February, will produce the cars through their new Spotlight Automotive Ltd. venture in a factory to be erected in Jiangsu. They did not say when the plant will open or what its capacity will be. Spotlight also will make other electric vehicles for Great Wall to sell in China.
BMW plans separately to supply other global markets with electric Minis made at the brand’s main factory in Oxford, England. The company emphasizes that the China venture does not undermine its commitment to production in the U.K.
China, where Mini sales reached 35,000 units last year, is the brand’s fourth-largest market, according to BMW. The company notes that it will market the EVs made by Spotlight through its existing sales network.
