BMW AG predicts government support will help turn China into the world's largest market for electric vehicles within five years.

Karsten Engel, who heads BMW China, made the assertion at an event in Shanghai announcing the city's plan to install 46 public EV charge stations by the end of 2014.

BMW plans to introduce its i3 EV in China in September through seven dealerships. Engel says limited supply will limit the car's potential sales volume in the country this year to fewer than 1,000 units.

Bloomberg News notes that several carmakers are introducing electric vehicles in China. Volkswagen plans to launch 15 such models there by 2018. Daimler has partnered with BYD Co. to make the Denza electric sedan. America's Tesla Motors began deliveries of its Model S EV in April.

China's central government hopes to put 500,000 EVs on the road by 2015. But Bloomberg says only about 70,000 electrics have been sold in the past five years.
