BMW AG reiterates to reporters in Germany that it plans to offer hybrid and/or all-electric powertrain options for its entire lineup over the next several years.
The company made the same assertion at the end of 2014 when it unveiled its new eDrive hybrid system. As then, BMW did not indicate when it will offer electrified powertrain options across its car and crossover model ranges.
The BMW brand’s only such vehicles today are the all-electric $2,400 i3 city car and the $140,000 i8 hybrid sport coupe. Neither model is a big seller.
The group’s Mini unit will add an all-electric model in 2019, and an electrified version of BMW’s X3 crossover is due in 2020. Media reports say BMW plans an all-electric option for its high-volume 3 Series sedan, but CEO Harald Kruger tells The Wall Street Journal only that the company is “open” to the idea.
